A Brief History of Coles District Volunteer
Fire & Rescue Squad
Established in 1949 as the Independent Hill Volunteer Fire Department,
our department was started by six local residents to provide fire
and rescue services to the area. The original fire station was located
on Rte. 234, as was an adjacent 110-foot tower used for spotting
fires in what was then a mostly wooded section of Prince William
County.
In 1979, our need for larger equipment and more space required
building the current fire station, also located on Rte. 234. The
old station was demolished the following year, while the fire tower
-- no longer needed because of the transformation of forest into
suburbs -- was removed in 1988 and transported to South Carolina,
where it remains in use today.
Our current membership is made up of active, junior and associate
members. The size of our membership allows us to field a variety
of trained personnel to serve the community, including two-dozen
volunteer firefighters and a nearly equal number of Emergency Medical
Technicians, as well as certified EMT, CPR and fire suppression
instructors.
We currently employ two Pierce Quantum Pumpers, a 2500-gallon Pierce
Lance tanker, a Pierce Quantum heavy duty squad, 2 Ford F-550 4x4
ambulances, a GMC brush truck and five chief's vehicles.
