Garrett Jordy’s Birthday Party

Two of Coles’ life members, Debra and Andy Negevsky, arranged with the department’s assistant public education officer, Christina Holcomb, to host their nephew Garrett Jordy’s fifth birthday party at the station on Saturday, August 13th. As part of the festivities, Lt. Chad Briggs gave the kids a hands-on tour of the fire apparatus, and then showed some of the parents the HazMat trailers and tools. Christina, who is also an EMT, gave the kids an up-close and personal look at the ambulances. One of the fathers mentioned how nice it was to have this kind of environment for a party, as opposed to the commercialized hype of a Chuck E Cheese’s.

Garrett’s mother Kami said “Garrett and his sister Cienna loved every bit of it, and they are still talking about how much fun they had. My husband Darrell and I, along with the other parents, even learned about some things, such as HazMat response and the tanker trucks. I think this turned out to be Garrett’s best birthday ever!”

"I grew up next to Coles, the organization has always been a part of me. I was baptized in the social hall, went to church in the social hall, attended boy scouts in the social hall, I have been in this building since I was just a few weeks old. I have seen the membership grow, the building expand, and the apparatus change throughout the years. I always knew I would end up volunteering with the department some day.

I joined the department shortly after I graduated high school. At that time, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, or in what direction to head; the guidance that this organization has given me has opened up a whole world of opportunities and careers.

I cannot say enough about this organization. It gave me direction in life, family that I will cherish forever, and a place I truly call my home. If you are considering joining a fire department, all I can say is come by our station, meet the people, listen to the folks that have been around for years and you will see this is a tight knit family of people who look out for their own. No need to look any further than CDVFD. And while your there, pick up an application and go for the ride of your life on "The 234 Express."

The first night I hopped on the firetruck was an early spring evening and it had been raining heavily for days. I was there for maybe five minutes before we got punched out on our first run of the evening. It was for a swiftwater rescue, someone had driven their car into high water and gotten stuck, and needed to be helped out before they were washed downstream. That man was just one of a half dozen or so we picked out of sinking cars that night. After eight back-to-back runs, if I recall correctly, we returned to the station to dry off and get some dinner. By then, it was the early morning hours and everyone was exhausted. We had just finished getting the rig washed and people were filing into the kitchen for grub when the tones dropped again for us to head out. And that we did, all night, until everyone was too tired to move; yet they still got up and cleaned up and headed off to their day jobs, knowing that not 12 hours later, at 1800 hours, the volunteers would be back on duty again, and we would all be right back there running those rigs out the door every time that bell rang."
