A Brief History of Coles District Volunteer
Fire & Rescue Squad
Established in 1949 by six members of the community to provide
fire and rescue services to the area of Independent Hill.
Started as the Independent Hill Volunteer Fire Department, the original
fire station was located on Rte. 234. Adjacent to the fire
station a 110 foot fire tower was constructed. The tower was
used for spotting fires in the then, mostly wooded areas of Prince
William County.
In 1979, the need for larger equipment and more space required the
building of the current fire station, also located on Rte. 234.
In early 1980, the old station was given it's last call and demolished.
The fire tower was outdated due to increasing population
and 9-1-1 phone system. It was removed and transported to
South Carolina in 1988, it is still in use today.
Our current membership is made up of Active, Junior and Associate,
members. The size of our membership allows us to provide the community
with trained personnel in a variety of fields in the fire service. We
currently have 1 ALS Provider, 3 BLS Protocols Instructors, and
1 CPR Instructor and 1 Fire Instructor, plus a variety of skilled
trained fire fighters .
We currently employ 2 Pierce Quantum's Pumpers, a 2500 gallon Pierce
Lance tanker, a Pierce Quantum heavy duty squad, 2 Ford F-550 4x4
ambulances, GMC brush truck and 5 Chief's vehicles.
